New Contemporary Wonders of the World: Global Voting Begins While Machu Picchu Keeps Its Historic Status
On this page
A new international campaign is inviting people worldwide to help choose the 7 Contemporary Wonders of the World, celebrating iconic landmarks built since 1801. The initiative, launched by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) in collaboration with New7Wonders, aims to recognize modern landmarks that have transformed tourism, culture, and communities across the globe.
Unlike the famous 2007 global vote that named the New Seven Wonders of the World, this campaign introduces an entirely new category. The original list remains unchanged, meaning Machu Picchu will continue to hold its prestigious title as one of the world’s New Seven Wonders.

Machu Picchu Will Remain One of the New Seven Wonders of the World
Following the announcement, many travelers questioned whether Machu Picchu would lose its status as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
The answer is simple: No.
Machu Picchu, elected through the historic worldwide vote announced on July 7, 2007, will permanently remain on the official list. Meanwhile, the new campaign focuses exclusively on modern landmarks constructed from 1801 onward, creating a separate recognition rather than replacing the existing wonders.
For Peru, this means Machu Picchu continues to be one of the country’s strongest tourism icons and one of the world’s most recognized archaeological destinations.
How the Global Voting Process Works
The search for the New Contemporary Wonders of the World will unfold in four stages over the next year. https://www.new7wonders.com/.
According to the WTTC, the official timeline includes:
- July 7, 2026: Global nominations open.
- January 7, 2027: Seventy nominees are announced and public voting begins.
- April 7, 2027: The list is narrowed to 30 finalists.
- July 7, 2027: The 7 Contemporary Wonders of the World are officially revealed.
Millions of travelers will be able to participate in selecting landmarks that represent the modern era of architecture, engineering, culture, and tourism.

Which Landmarks Can Be Nominated?
Unlike the original New Seven Wonders of the World, the new campaign focuses on landmarks completed after 1801.
Potential nominees may include:
- Famous museums
- Bridges
- Skyscrapers
- Cultural landmarks
- Modern engineering projects
- Tourism infrastructure
- Contemporary monuments
Selection criteria include cultural significance, contribution to tourism, economic impact, architectural value, and influence on local communities.
Could Peru Have a New Candidate?
Although Machu Picchu is not eligible because it already belongs to the official New Seven Wonders of the World, Peru may nominate a modern landmark that meets the campaign’s eligibility requirements.
No official Peruvian candidates have been announced so far, but the initiative presents an opportunity to showcase the country’s contemporary architectural and cultural achievements on a global stage.

Why Machu Picchu Continues to Inspire Travelers Worldwide
Nearly two decades after being named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu remains Peru’s most visited tourist attraction and one of the world’s most recognizable cultural landmarks.
Located high in the Andes Mountains, the UNESCO World Heritage Site attracts visitors from every continent thanks to its extraordinary Inca architecture, breathtaking scenery, and rich cultural heritage.
Its continued recognition reinforces Peru’s position as one of South America’s leading travel destinations.
A New Chapter for Global Tourism
The 7 Contemporary Wonders of the World campaign seeks to celebrate landmarks that define modern civilization while encouraging sustainable tourism and international travel.
By highlighting both globally famous icons and emerging destinations, organizers hope to inspire travelers to discover places that have shaped the modern world through architecture, innovation, and cultural significance.
As nominations begin and public voting approaches, the campaign is expected to generate worldwide interest among travelers, tourism organizations, and cultural institutions.
